How Big Does A Chicken Coop Need To Be?

The chicken coop for 7 chickens must be at least 4 square feet per chicken, though smaller breeds like Bantam chickens may only need about 2-3 square feet per bird. If you have 7 chickens, the coop should be around 28 square feet.

Think about getting a chicken coop and run attached. This gives your chickens more space to run around outside and engage in natural behaviors like pecking, scratching, and other types of foraging.

This run could be attached to the coop, meaning the coop and run operate as a single unit when moving around. Keep in mind that you would rather give your chickens “too much” space than not enough.

What Style of Coop Should I Choose for 7 Chickens?

With all the options on the market for prefab chicken coops, it’s difficult to know what choice would be a chicken coop for 7 chickens.

Here are some things to consider when choosing your style of chicken coop for 7 chickens…

Size – Do you have a lot of backyard space for a coop? Would you save space by keeping your coop and run attached or separate? Think about how big your coop needs to be and where you want it located.

Security – Is your coop going to be secure enough to protect your chickens from hungry predators? What about when a windstorm comes along or you get some heavy rain? Your coop should be secure enough that these things will not be a concern.

Climate -Another thing to consider is climate. Do you live in a very cold region? If so, consider using heated roosts in your coop or adding extra insulation. What about if you live in a hot climate? Are your chickens going to stay cool enough in your coop? What are some ways you can regulate the temperature of your coop?
