How Many Chickens Can Fit in a 3×5 Chicken Coop?

Generally, a 3×5 chicken coop is the perfect chicken coop for 4 chickens and can hold up to about 6 chickens fairly comfortably. You want to ensure that your chickens have enough space to peck, scratch, and roost with ample space. If you are undecided about the right coop size, go with the larger coop, so you can be sure your hens are not overcrowded.

Things to Consider When Buying a Coop

Breed of Chickens– Do you own extra large chickens like Australorps or Cochin chickens? If so, you may want to consider getting a larger coop than a 3×5 chicken coop to accommodate them. If your chickens are extra small, then you could probably add another chicken or two to your flock.

Roosting Space- Be sure that your chickens have enough roosting area in your coop. Roosting is an important part of a chicken’s life and helps it feel more secure and comfortable.

Outdoor Run– An outdoor run is a very essential part of a chicken coop. Chickens need a chance to get outside and explore, engaging in natural behaviors like pecking, dust bathing, and scratching. Be sure that your run is secure and cannot be compromised by predators.

Predator Protection– How safe are your chickens from predators? Are your doors predator-proof and are your walls strong enough to keep a sly fox or raccoon out? Be sure to invest in a coop made from quality materials that keep your chickens in and predators out.
