How Big Does A Chicken Coop Need To Be?
The general guideline to have the best spacing for your chicken coop is 4 sq ft of coop space per standard breed chicken and 8 sq ft of coop space per standard heavy breed chicken. This is only the space for a chicken coop, to look more in-depth, we can look at roosts and nesting boxes.
In a chicken coop for 4 chickens, the recommended space for a roost is 6 inches. A roost is an elevated bar inside of the chicken coop, usually a narrow plank, that your chickens will perch on to sleep. This is part of your chicken’s survival instincts as they’ve learned to seek high spots to spend the night for thousands of years.
The space guideline for nesting boxes is 12” x 10” x 10”, 1 nesting box will be enough for 4-5 hens. A nesting box is a pretty simple concept. It is an enclosed area in the chicken coop built to give your hens a place where they can lay eggs in peace and comfort. This is one of the most crucial things to get right as the average hen will lay an egg nearly every day so it will be heavily used.
What Style of Coop Should I Choose for 4 Chickens?
With all the options on the market for chicken coops, it’s difficult to know what choice would be a chicken coop for 4 chickens.
Here are some things to consider when choosing your style of chicken coop for 4 chickens…
Size – Do you have enough yard space to work with? Do you want a chicken coop and run together? Find a coop that will give your flock of hens ample space to move around.
Security – Your coop should be strong enough to withstand a rain storm or wind storm, and be a protection from the elements. It is also important to think about your chickens’ safety from predators as well.
Climate -Is your coop going to be overly hot in the summer and overly cold in the winter? Invest in a coop that is at least partially insulated so your chickens will not be exposed to harsh weather conditions.
