Regulations for Chicken Coops in Louisville KY

According to Chapter 91 of Louisville’s code of ordinances on Animals, there are specific regulations you must follow to have a backyard chicken coop.

To keep chickens in Louisville, you must obtain a permit from the city’s Animal Services Department.

Coop Placement and Regulations

Louisville requires chickens and coops to be kept on lots of at least a 1/2 acre unless you have five or fewer non-crowing chickens and no more than one crowing chicken.

Additionally, your coops must be placed at least 25 feet away from neighboring homes and can not be visible from the street.

Generally, Louisville allows a maximum of 5 non-crowing birds.

Cleanliness and upkeep

Chicken coops and attached runs must be regularly cleaned to maintain a healthy environment and reduce the build-up of foul odors. You can use carbon materials like wood chips as bedding to prevent these odors from accumulating.

Your chickens must have access to a predator-proof chicken coop that provides at least 4 square feet of space per chicken.

Chicken Coops for Sale in Louisville KY: Commonly Asked Questions

What breed of chickens are best suited for backyard environments?

Thinking about expanding your flock and enjoying fresh eggs right from your backyard? There are so many wonderful chicken breeds to choose from! Some of the most popular egg-laying breeds include Rhode Island Reds, Leghorns, Sussex, Australorps, and Plymouth Rocks, to name a few. For more insights on the best egg-laying breeds and what makes them unique, check out our blog post, “The Best Egg-laying Chickens.

How do I protect my chickens from predators?

Many chicken farmers face challenges in keeping their chickens safe from predators. A frequent mistake is building coops that lack the necessary sturdiness, particularly in areas where predators are common.

In regions like Kentucky, predators such as raccoons, coyotes, foxes, weasels, and even domestic dogs can easily breach coops made from weak wire or flimsy wood. If you know predators are in the area, it’s wise to skip the chicken wire and opt for more robust materials for your coop. Be sure to install secure latches on the doors and properly seal the windows to keep your feathered friends safe and sound. Your chickens deserve a cozy and secure home!

What should I feed my chickens, and how much?

In addition to their standard layer feed, chickens love munching on nutritious greens like lettuce, kale, and turnip greens! You can also treat them to delicious snacks like watermelon, strawberries, and blueberries now and then—just be sure to keep it balanced and not too frequent.

On average, a laying hen consumes about a quarter pound of feed daily, or around one and a half pounds per week. Of course, this amount may vary based on the size and breed of your chickens, so it’s always good to keep an eye on their needs!
