Regulations for Chicken Coops in Los Angeles
Within the city limits of San Jose, you can have up to six small animals without needing a permit, but with a permit, you can have up to 20. However, whether you’re in the city or not, the chickens must be female; no roosters older than 4 months are allowed in any local backyard. The regulations on the number of chickens may differ depending on your location within San Jose.
Chicken coops must be located in the property’s rear yard and at least 20 feet away from any neighboring residence. Chicken coops must be designed to prevent the escape of chickens and must be predator-proof. Roosters are allowed, but only one per property.
Sanitation and Maintenance
Chickens must have a clean and sanitary environment, including clean water, food, and adequate shelter from the elements.
Chicken owners are responsible for maintaining their coop and keeping it clean to prevent the accumulation of waste and pests.
Health and Safety Regulations
Chicken owners are prohibited from selling eggs or meat from their chickens. The city may conduct occasional inspections of chicken coops to ensure that owners are following regulations.

Chicken Coops for Sale in Los Angeles CA: Commonly Asked Questions
What breed of chickens are best suited for backyard environments?
There are plenty of chicken breeds you might consider adding to your flock. Some popular options include Rhode Island Reds, Silkies, Sussex, Orpingtons, Brahmas, and many others. Take a look at our blog on the Friendliest Chicken Breeds for more details on which breeds might be the best fit for you.
How do I protect my chickens from predators?
Many chicken farmers often make mistakes when it comes to protecting their chickens from predators. One common error is building coops that aren’t sturdy enough, particularly in areas where predators are abundant.
In California, predators such as raccoons, coyotes, foxes, weasels, and even domestic dogs can easily penetrate coops constructed with weak wire and flimsy wood. If you’re aware of predators in your area, avoid using chicken wire. Instead, opt for sturdier materials for your coop. Additionally, ensure that your coop doors have strong latches, and properly seal your windows to keep predators out.
What should I feed my chickens, and how much?
In addition to their regular layer feed, chickens can also benefit from nutritious greens like lettuce, kale, and turnip greens. They may also enjoy treats like watermelon, strawberries, and blueberries, but it’s important not to overdo it. On average, a laying hen consumes about a quarter pound of feed daily, totaling around a pound and a half per week. However, this quantity can vary depending on the size or breed of your chickens.
