How Many Chickens Can Fit in a 4×4 Chicken Coop?

It’s safe to assume that 6-8 chickens can comfortably fit in a 4×4 chicken coop. Be sure that your chickens are not crowded, and when in doubt, consider sizing up to a larger coop like a 4×6 or bigger. In general, one can assume that a 4×4 chicken coop is a good chicken coop for 6 chickens.

Things to Consider When Buying a Coop

Breed of Chickens– What chicken breeds are on your farm? If you own a large flock of chickens it is a good idea to think about the size of your coop. Large breeds like Brahmas may require a bit more space.

Roosting Space- Are your chickens able to use the roosting space in your coop? Roosting is an important part of a chicken’s life and it is important that your hens have a place where they can relax stress-free.

Outdoor Run– Another important part of a chicken coop is the run. A run is an outdoor area of a coop where chickens can scratch and peck. It is important that you invest in a run area where your chickens are safe from outdoor elements. You can often find runs and coops connected.

Predator Protection– Is your coop truly safe? Are predators able to sneak into some little hole, and are your windows secure? Chicken predators like foxes and hawks can really desecrate a flock. Make sure that your chickens are not susceptible to their worst nightmare.
